This HIV support group, known as a Kafoo in The Gambia, is based in the town of Brikama, the capital of the Western Division of The Gambia. It works to support families and individuals living with HIV and AIDS, seeking to improve their lives and raise awareness of the conditions through skills development, fundraising and income generating activities.

Voluntary Project Overview

Voluntary work abroadThe support group runs as a daily drop-in centre for members. It organizes fund raising events, health-related and other training for members and has various income-generating activities/micro-enterprises, including a farm. It is closely linked to the local AIDS/HIV clinic, and is currently funded by UNAIDS. The organisation is quite small and is expanding in terms of members welcomed and projects undertaken. They therefore need help in various areas in order successfully to meet their goals.

The Volunteer Abroad Role

Voluntary projects Volunteers abroad are working alongside the staff to help in many aspects of the organisation. This includes administration systems, project management, accounting, training of staff and proposals and reports writing to international institutions such as UNAIDS and Global Funds. This project is especially interesting for people wishing to gain experience in the development sector. Volunteers with a healthcare background can also assist in areas such as nutrition, health education, and counseling.

Other Volunteer Abroad opportunities
